Your Guide to Saturday
Saturday is all about getting out, touring, and exploring. Oh and another big block party!
For the first full weekend day of the LA Design Festival, we recommend getting out and hitting some of the tours. If you’re not into tours, check out the talks. If you’re not into the tour or the talks, just go shopping. But definitely meet back up downtown at the A+D Museum for another big block party. Because, summer.
Hop on the first-ever ADU Home Tour. As Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) - aka Granny Flats, Garage Apartments, Mini Backhouses - become the topic du jour, architects are embracing this new typology making it easier and faster for homeowners to become micro-developers. Check out what they’ve been building on this self-guided tour. And if urban art is your thing, hop on a Lyft scooter or BYO-bike and take the first-ever Tour de Type, exploring the murals of the Arts District.
Brooks Atwood starts it out strong for R&A Design, followed by Peter Zellner and Jorge Gracia talking about founding, running, and cultivating new talent with their Free Schools of Architecture in LA and Tijuana. Next up Svenja Diekmann of Hem talks about Designing the Classics of Tomorrow, Buro Happold talks about their experience with the Building Bridges to Prosperity project, and Steve Fortunato from Fig House talks about the new era of hospitality. AIGA LA has lined up an all-star panel to talk about Design with Purpose through their lens, industrial designer extraordinaire Simon Kang talks about designing for the small, and we cap the night off with the 13th annual AIA|LA Restaurant Design Awards talk and reception. It’s truly an epic day.
