Each year the LA Design Festival recognizes a woman for her outstanding contributions to her industry, her city, and society at-large.  This year, the ICON Award goes to the City of Los Angeles’ highest ranking architect, Deborah Weintraub, AIA, LEED AP.

In an industry where gender parity is a highly debated issue, Chief Deputy City Engineer Deborah Weintraub is an exception.  As the City of Los Angeles’ highest ranking architect at the helm of an incredibly complex organization that provides design, project management and construction management services for approximately 442 active projects totaling $3.5 billion, she is a driving force in reshaping our city.

Her current projects range from the LA Convention Center expansion, to the design and construction of the new 6th Street Viaduct.  Her office is also considering proposals for reuse of the site of the old Parker Center building and evaluating submissions for a design competition for a new park at 1st and Broadway in downtown Los Angeles. A champion for sustainability, Weintraub has seen our city through a sea change when it comes to public building.

Frances Anderton, host of KCRW’s Design and Architecture show sits down with Deborah on June 9th at Helms Bakery for a conversation about her work and her vision for the future of Los Angeles.  Helms Bakery District will host a special reception in her honor.
